The Concept:
The Scarab is a heavy-duty asteroid belt traveller, built not for speed or elegance, but for survival in one of the most hostile environments imaginable. The design draws from the scarab beetle: armoured, compact, low to its centre of gravity, with mechanical appendages that suggest function over aesthetics.

The project initiated with 25 silhouette explorations in Photoshop, focusing on dynamic shape variations, including angular and organic forms. A silhouette was selected for its symmetric tension, characterised by a curved central body with mechanical appendages, embodying both protection and threat. Subsequently, three 3D form explorations in 3D Coat were developed to evaluate the silhouette’s volumetric translation, leading to a final model that combined the best elements of each interpretation.

Key Takeaways:

Starting with silhouettes rather than jumping straight into 3D forced the design to be strong at its most fundamental level: shape. A vehicle that reads clearly as a flat black form will always read clearly as a 3D object. The silhouette stage is where the real design decisions happen; everything after is just realising what's already been decided.
