The Scarab is a heavy-duty asteroid belt traveller, designed for survival rather than speed or elegance.
Its form draws directly from the scarab beetle: armoured, compact, low to its centre of gravity, with mechanical appendages suggesting function over decoration.


Development started with 25 silhouette explorations in Photoshop, testing dynamic shape variations across both angular and organic forms before committing to a direction. One of the iterations of the silhouette got selected for its structure: a curved central body paired with mechanical appendages, reading as both protective and threatening at once. From there, three separate 3D form explorations in 3D Coat tested how that flat silhouette translated into volume, since a strong 2D shape doesn't always hold up once given depth. The final model combined the strongest elements from each of those three explorations rather than committing early to a single pass.

Silhouette testing ran through multiple rounds before selection, weighing angular aggression against organic flow to find a shape reading clearly as armoured and low-slung even as a flat black form. Once in 3D, each of the three form explorations pushed different aspects; one emphasised mass and weight, another refined the mechanical appendage detailing, and a third tested proportion and centre of gravity. No single exploration got treated as final; each contributed specific elements to the resulting model.



The final model reads as compact, armoured, and low-slung, with mechanical appendages reinforcing its function as a survival vehicle rather than a speed-orientated one.
Rendered in KeyShot, the final piece brings out material definition and lighting that the earlier 3D coat blockouts couldn't communicate, giving the design its finished presentation quality.
Starting with silhouettes rather than jumping straight into 3D forced the design to succeed at its most fundamental level first: shape. A vehicle reading clearly as a flat black silhouette will always read clearly once built out in three dimensions. The silhouette stage is where the real design decisions get made; everything after that is execution of what's already been decided.
